EMPLOYER ASSISTED HOUSING
Recently, we've been working to interest employers in providing modest financial help to employees facing unusual housing costs: buying a home or moving to a new apartment.
Employer assisted housing is not a new idea. Factory owners in the old days built small homes nearby for workers. And some modern corporations give new executives lavish housing help. What we propose is different: small-scale help at critical times for ordinary employees.
That help could take a variety of forms. For example, in our model: a $5,000 no-interest loan for homebuyers, forgivable over five years of continued employment, and a $1,500 grant to employees renting a new apartment.
Brattleboro Savings and Loan has adopted a version of this program, and we're discussing it with other employers in the Brattleboro area and elsewhere.
For more information see our sample letter to employers and proposal for an employer assisted housing program.
