What got us together in 1995 was awareness of some families at risk of homelessness for lack of a few hundred dollars. The result was ‘Save Our Homes’, a no-interest loan program for people with housing emergencies. Our maximum loan is $400. That much help toward a security deposit, back rent or even property tax delinquency can sometimes make all the difference. As of June 1, 2008, we’d loaned $240,312 to 717 families in thirteen towns.

We make loans only:

  • where there is a serious emergency
  • where the loan is likely to enable the borrower to get past the emergency and back on their feet.

Decisions are made weekly by the Helpfund committee. Applications may be brought to the committee by different organizations. But most requests for housing help come through BAAH’s loan coordinator, Dave Weaver. He meets with the applicant and discusses their situation. If the request seems appropriate, he develops a budget with them and a repayment plan. The usual minimum monthly payment is $20. Before an application is brought to the committee, information is verified by talking with landlords, service agencies and others.

Generally, the Helpfund committee has approved about 60% of Save Our Homes loan requests that have been brought to it.

If you think you might be eligible for a loan, please call Dave Weaver at 380-2631 to arrange an appointment.

Save Our Homes is a ‘revolving’ loan fund. We need faithful repayment by every borrower if we’re to continue to help other people!

HELPFUND provides small grants to individuals and families who have urgent financial needs of any type, and who have sought help from usual sources without success. It is an informal program initiated by BAAH in 1997. Its purposes, as we stated them then, are:

  • to make the process of seeking aid clear, simple and dignified.
  • to make the process of granting aid orderly and the use of available funds efficient.

Decisions about Helpfund grants, and about Save Our Homes loans, are made by a committee representing a variety of service organizations and agencies, including BAAH, Southeastern Vermont Community Action, Early Education Services, churches and the Vermont Department of Children and Families. The committee often is able to make wiser decisions than its members could individually and to piece together help from a variety of sources beyond what any one source could provide.
